Sea surface temperature T2 may be inferred from Defense Meteorological Satellite Program DMSP satellite measurements of infrared radiances in atmospheric windows if errors in instrumentation, data processing, and satellite orientation are properly accounted for. Even in the absence of clouds, the slight opacity of the atmosphere in the windows causes the temperature seen by the satellite to be lower than that measured by ships or aircraft. Clouds produce the same effect, but generally of a greater magnitude.
