The study examines the evolution of U.S. postwar security strategy which is characterized as follows dates approximate Period of deteriorating major power cooperation 1945-47 containment of communism primarily through economic and military assistance, Truman Doctrine 1947-50 containment through military intervention 1950-53 deterrence through doctrine of massive retaliation, The New Look 1954-56 strategic sufficiency, Eisenhower Doctrine1957-60 mutual strategic deterrence and doctrine of flexible response 1961-70, the birth of detente 1967 mutual strategic deterrence and local reliance on indigenous resources backed by U.S. flexible response, Nixon Doctrine 1970-74.
