Hypoxia from a variety of causes such as trauma, shock, fire, and mechanical failure of pressurized aircraft is a potential hazard to military personnel. The availability of noninvasive methods for evaluating the severity of both general and local hypoxia of tissues would be of great value. The objectives of this project were to 1 examine the effects of hypoxia produced in various ways on the intracellular oxidation-reduction state reflecting oxygen availability, and 2 use these results to validate relatively less invasive techniques e.g., measuring the surface oxygen tension of organs.
