The ejection of large numbers of protons and other charged particles as a result of solar flares and their direction into the polar ionosphere effectively lowers the reflection height for vlf propagation. Two paths in the polar region were studied and were found to be altered significantly by solar-flare activity. Additional paths in the polar region should be investigated to determine the existence of an enhanced D-region and its effect upon navigational systems.
