It is the purpose of this contract to investigate the mechanisms used by soil bacteria to oxidize ortho-, meta- and para-xylene and related aromatic compounds. The pathway of ortho-xylene biodegradation by a Nocardia species is studied in detail. The regulation and genetics of the p-xylene pathway are discussed. The microbial degradation of the sulfur-containing constitutents of crude petroleum, including the investigation of the metabolism of dibenzothiophene by bacteria and the metabolic products formed during the degradation of dibenzothiophene by a Beijerinckia species.
