An active target for use in the study of dolphin echolocation has been designed, built, and tested by Applied Research Laboratories, The University of Texas at Austin. The active target is an electronicacoustical device that transmits a programmed synthetic echo to a dolphin when the device is triggered by the dolphins echolocation signal. The frequency and amplitude of the signal transmitted by the active target, and the delay in response after triggering, can be controlled between wide limits.
