Abstract:

Hydraulic ram is the phenomenon associated with the damage caused by high speed projectile impacts with fuel tanks. It is divided into five phases, entry, shock, drag, cavity and exit. The entry, shock and drag phases were of concern in this study. An analytical solution for the pressures developed in the shock phase was formulated based on bullet impact parameters. Pressures developed in the drag phase were experimentally correlated with theoretical predictions. These pressures were proven to be dependent on front wall wave reflections.
