The research on the simultaneous presentation of auditory and visual information has been reviewed and the issues examined as to whether the human operator can perform better when the same information is transmitted simultaneously through both the auditory and visual channels than when a single auditory or visual channel is used. The implications of the research may be summarized by saying that the data generally support some propositions which have implications for the design of military displays employing simultaneous auditory-visual presentations.
