Abstract:

One particularly critical function in the development of a large software system is the specification, design, control, and documentation of communications between program modules. Problems in this area contribute significantly to the length of time needed for system tests, the difficulty of long-term maintenance, and the lack of system flexibility. Although the state-of-the-art of Software Engineering has made great strides these past few years, the area of intermodule communication is still lacking in engineering tools and methodologies. This technical report presents a recently developed language which can be used to specify, control, and document program intermodule communication. A system named BRIDGES which processes the new specification language is also discussed.
