The track record of toxicology in predicting chemically induced cancer in man is examined. The intention is to identify what lessons might be learned that would lead to improved predictions and, perhaps, to greater applications of carcinogenicity testing. Data are reviewed from animals experimentation and human experience for several well-known carcinogenic compounds. The extent of the match between the two sets of data is noted. The compounds chosen for this study are ones upon which there are extensive studies and which also are of current interest.
