Abstract:

Ecosystems are systems of living organisms in a physical chemical environment which have developed and adapted over long periods of time. As such, they present unique problems for quantitative description and prediction. Mathematical models can be powerful tools for analyzing systems. Models are constructed for particular purposes and are subject to numerous limitations. Although it can be concluded that all models are less than perfect, their evaluation should only be based on characteristics in relation to their proposed use. In this regard an optimal balance between accuracy and practicability is sought, and, in fact, is often approached.
