Pressure and displacement hydrophones were used for reception of underwater signals in the frequency range, 1 to 30 Hz. Both hydrophone types were suspended below the surface on specially mounted cables intended to minimize vertical motion. In spite of careful suspension isolation, vertical cable motion dominated over the signal in the displacement sensor but not in the pressure sensor. The latter sensor was used to obtain data on background noise in the above frequency range.
