An improved XM-76 stabilized viewing device was tested in a scout helicopter flight scenario. Target acquisition performance was significantly correlated with the airsickness ratings of an onboard experimenter. Since there was no significant difference between the magnitude of the symptoms observed when the device was stabilized and the magnitude when caged, the stabilization feature proper could not be identified as a problem source. Parts II and III of the report will deal with inflight measures of airsickness potential and the laboratory evaluation of individual susceptibility to airsickness respectively.
