Engine inlet and windshield anti-ice and rotor blade deice systems were flight tested in natural icing conditions and in an icing cloud. The CH-46A, when configured with Airframe Changes 58, 80, 118, and IBCC 61-777, is suitable for flight in icing conditions at ambient temperatures down to 10F. The inlet anti-ice system failed to meet specification requirements in that when operating in ambient temperatures below 10F, the anti-ice system did not maintain the inlet in an ice-free condition and engine damage from ingested inlet ice occurred. The rotor blade deice system and the windshield anti-ice system met applicable specification requirements and are satisfactory for service use.
