Abstract:

A one-dimensional model based on a continuous slowing down approximation is used to study proton deposition in the atmosphere. A dipole geomagnetic field is assumed, and a three constituent atmospheric model is adopted. The effects of hydrogen atoms created by charge exchange processes with atmospheric gases are included, and secondary electron processes are taken into account. Calculations of ionization rates as functions of altitude for several incident proton energies are made and compared to the results of similar calculations using a different method.
