Abstract:

The study shows that the Republic of South Africa, because of its domestic social policies coupled with its strategic location, mineral wealth and relative military power could be the scene of insurgency or guerrilla warfare which could involve the worlds powers. While acknowledging that armed conflict could occur from Angola and South West Africa through Botswana and Rhodesia to Mozambique, the paper concentrates on the Republic of South Africa since it is here that any conflict would have serious international consequences. The conclusions center on US policies as the US, the most powerful nation committed to racial equality, is and will continue to be faced with a conflict over moral values and strategic considerations.
