The purpose of this study was to determine what changes in the condition of barracks were most desirable to enlisted men, to document these attitudes, and to obtain some understanding of the responses. To attain these goals, a survey was conducted at six U.S. Army posts and included a sample of about 2000 men, which was considered representative of the enlisted Army population. The major instrument in the study was a questionnaire that was completed by all men in the sample. For some respondents, a brief slide presentation, an activity diary, and a personality inventory were used in support of the questionnaire. Two architects provided a professional comparison of several barracks at each location.
