Abstract:

Analysis and experiments were performed to demonstrate the feasibility of optical detection of low frequency sound. Both amplitude and phase detection were examined and in each case experimental results substantiated theoretical predictions. The interferometer phase detection technique was found superior to the beam steering amplitude modulation technique due to the formers frequency independence and greater sensitivity. Theoretical extrapolation of experimental results to parameter values not achievable with available laboratory equipment indicate a practically achievable sensitivity of -80 db re 1micro bar per meter path length for phase detection.
