Abstract:

The reaction of the organometallic reagents c5H52Ni and C5H5NiCO2 with tetraalkylammonium salts of B11H132- provides a convenient high yield route to the unknown icosahedral species, C5H5NiB11H11-. The reaction of C5H5NiCO2 with the borane anion, B10H102-, results in insertions of two C5H5Ni-moieties into the polyhedral framework to produce the icosahedral metalloborane C5H5Ni2B10H10. The existence and great stabilities of these icosahedral nickelaboranes are predicted by polyhedral counting rules and furnish a pleasing example of the a priori predictive ability of these rules.
