Bivalent and trivalent stable alkyls and dialkylamides of Group IV elements, stabilised kinetically by selection of ligands which are bulky and free from beta-hydrogen have been prepared. They include SiR3, GeR3, GeR3, SnR2, SnR3, PbR2, GeNR122, GeNR1R22, GeNR123, GeNR1R23, SnNR122, SnNR1R22, SnNR123, SnNR1R23, PbNR122 and PbNR1R22 RMe3Si2CH, R1Me3Si, and R2Me3C. The ligand properties of the good Lewis bases SnR2 and PbR2 have begun to be explored in a transition metal context. 119Sn NMR data on 35 compounds, many of them with tin-to-transition metal bonds, have been obtained by double resonance experiments.
