Abstract:
The molecular structure and the optical properties of cholesteric liquid crystals are discussed. Under external influences the molecular structure, characterized by coefficient of optical activity, changes and so does the color of cholesteric liquid crystals. These are analyzed theoretically with the hope to find out the possibility and limitation of applying cholesteric liquid crystals to the field of fracture mechanics.
