Abstract:
A linearized theory is presented for density perturbations in a two-dimensional laser beam as a function of cross-flow Mach number and time after beam turn-on. All times and Mach numbers are considered. A closed-form solution is presented for uniform heating in a circular beam with M 1. The results are compared with the corresponding one-dimensional solution. The time scale to reach steady state and the order of magnitude of the steady-state density perturbation when M approximately 1 are deduced by consideration of nonlinear effects. A qualitative discussion is then given of the variation of the density perturbation along a sluing beam.
