Abstract:

The report documents the characteristics of the existing intermediate maintenance support structure for surface ships. It is Phase I of a two-phase study whose objective is to estimate the total of intermediate and depot maintenance that will be required by surface combatants during the late 1970-early 1980 time frame. The planned procurement of ships such as the Patrol Frigate, Sea Control Ship, and Hydrofoil Missile Ship requires that the present maintenance strategy be reassessed, since each of those designs will have limited on-board maintenance capability. The study concentrates upon the destroyer tenders ADs, repair ships ARs, the Amphibious Maintenance Support Unit AMSU, the Mine Force Support Group MFSG, the Development and Training Center DATC, the Mobile Technical Units MOTUs and the Fleet Maintenance Assistance Groups FMAGs.
