Abstract:
Acoustic emission studies of five high strength aluminum alloys are reported. Threshold crossing counts, their dependence on the threshold level, and frequency spectra were measured during fracture toughness tests and correlated to stress intensity factor. In the T7 conditions, acoustic emission due to plastic zone expansion was initially detected followed by that due to slow crack growth.
