Abstract:

The MRI Total Liquid Water Content Instrument is an aircraft mounted sampler for real-time mass measurements of ice and water drops in the atmosphere. The sample is collected and suspended in a silicone carrier for transport to a detector cell. The cell is an annular-tube electric capacitor in an oscillator circuit. The frequency of the oscillator decreases as the water fraction increases in the silicone carrier flowing through the cell. The high volume sampling rate, typically 100 CFM at 130 mph, assures a representative sample. Limited flight tests indicate successful operation in rain.
