Abstract:
Extensive life tests of several dielectric systems have shown that those best suited for pulse discharge energy storage capacitors requiring high energy storage density are paperK-Film with castor oil 218 joulespound of active storage volume at 100,000 shots life, paperKapton with MCS 1489 oil 120 joulespound 100,000 shots, paperpolysulfone with silicon oil 94 joulespound at 100,000 shots and paperpolypropylene with MCS oil 97 joulespound at 100,000 shots. All paper capacitors are promising but require further testing and an improved screening procedure to ensure reliability. K-Film is suitable for low pulse rates a few shots per second only while polypropylene is best suited for high pulse rates. For moderate pulse rates of a few hundred shots per second, and high temperature operation, both Kapton and polysulfone are attractive. Kapton has the higher energy storage density but polysulfone is considerably cheaper.
