Abstract:

The problem of residual strain in castings of alkali halides KCl and SrCl2 doped KCl and alkaline earth fluorides CaF2 has been overcome by the development of proper annealing and slow cooling procedures. Large castings 5- 12 in. diameter of CaF2 and small castings 3 in. diameter of SrF2 have been produced with low optical absorption coefficients at 5.25 micrometers. High quality CaF2 castings have been obtained by using as starting material either high purity single crystal chips or reagent grade powder that has been subjected to reactive atmosphere processing RAP in teflon vapors.
