The direct measurement of the fluorescent lifetimes of excited atomic and molecular species requires an excitation source of short duration compared to the lifetime of interest. In the case of allowed electronic transitions in metal halides, of interest as possible laser candidates, such lifetimes are typically tens of nanoseconds. Thus a laser pulse duration of less than 10 nanoseconds will be required. For maximum versatility, wavelength tunability over the visible spectrum is desired. These requirements are uniquely met by pulse laser-pumped dye laser systems. In this category are the following types Solid pulsed NdYAG Laser, Solid Pulsed Ruby Laser, and Pulsed Gas N2 Laser. The N2 gas pulsed laser was recommended for the laser induced fluorescence experiments.
