The application of a technique referred to as digital frequency warping to unequal bandwidth spectral analysis is discussed. This technique transforms a sequence in such a way that the Fourier transforms of the original and transformed sequences are related by a nonlinear transformation of the frequency axis. An equal resolution analysis carried out on the transformed sequence then corresponds to an unequal resolution of the original sequence. The authors present a framework for discussing the problem of spectral analysis and indicate how the Discrete Fourier Transform is commonly applied. They then discuss in a general sense how unequal bandwidth spectral analysis can be implemented by first implementing a nonlinear distortion of the frequency axis, followed by an equal bandwidth analysis.
