The replacement of capital assets in the construction field is a very complex matter involving factors both internal and external to the equipment itself. This, coupled with the magnitude of capital invested, requires a comprehensive approach to replacement decisions if the equipment inventory is to be managed effectively. This thesis explores the criteria upon which the construction equipment replacement decision is based in two arenas commercial construction and the U.S. Naval Construction Force NCF. The discussion of criteria used by commercial companies is complemented with concepts from the theoretical approach. This theoreticalcommercial approach constitutes a frame of reference by which to compare the criteria utilized in replacing NCF construction equipment.
