The Observation and Theory of Fluctuations in Deep Ocean Currents,

The report describes an analysis of data made from five strings of Richardson type current meters in the Antilles current, from depths of 50 to 5000 meters. Distribution-free methods of analysis were used, in order to avoid the assumptions of weak stationarity associated with power spectra. The analysis was carried out in polar coordinates in order to preserve the fine details of the data in direction. The compass reading is tentatively identified as the time integral of the vorticity, since it measures the orientation angle of an axisymmetric rotator, the instrument case.
