The concentrations of methaqualone and 6-hydroxy-methaqualone in urine samples were analyzed by isotope dilution analysis and field ionization mass spectrometry. Analyses performed on samples collected over an 11 day period following drug ingestion show that these compounds are excreted with halflives of approximately 50 hr. Detection of the metabolite up to one month after ingestion of the drug is possible. The sensitivity of the technique has been increased by using higher purity carrier compounds and more thorough extraction and purification procedures. The present limit of detection of drugs is approximately 10 to the minus 10th power gml.
