Analysis of a Radar Rain Return at Frequencies of 9.375, 35, 70, and 95 GHz

A series of measurements of radar backscatter from rain have been made at frequencies of 9.375, 35, 70, and 95 GHz. The geometry of the experiment and the equipment were chosen such as to provide data useful to the equipment designer in the choice of operating frequency for his particular mission. Amplitude statistics for both linear and circular polarization were obtained for rain rates between 1 mmhr and 90 mmhr. Non-coherent spectral measurements and correlation properties were investigated in detail as functions of frequency and rain rate. Limited comparisons are made between theory and experimental results and certain properties of the results are discussed in relation to the phenomenology of rain return.
