Abstract:

The report presents two new methods for solving problems in reducing electromagnetic back-scatter from conducting surfaces. The first method is concerned with optimizing the design of microwave absorbing multilayers for uniform response over wideband and wide angle of incidence subject to the constraint that a certain layer or layers to be included are specified for structural, thermodynamic, or other reasons. Up to two layers can be specified as to their sequence in the multilayer and their respective characteristic impedances within a given range. In the second part of the report a method is proposed for free-space impedance matching by using the control of effective surface impedance for a conducting surface by the geometry of indentations in the surface and the material filling them. The required frequency behavior of the dielectric and ferrite materials involved is deduced and the geometry and materials characteristics of a simple case calculated to illustrate the method and orders of magnitude of the relevant parameters.
