Abstract:

Alumina and hot pressed alumina, silicon nitride and silicon carbide were fractured at various loading rates and temperatures. The fracture surfaces were studied by optical and scanning electron microscopy. The fracture origins were located and the flaws at the fracture origins were identified, characterized and classified according to various types. Fracture stress vs. flaws size curves were plotted for various types of flaws. Applications of these results to ceramic processing, designing with brittle materials and theories of fracture are also discussed.
