Causal prophylactic evaluation of new antimalarials has revealed several extremely active 8-aminoquinolines and other compounds. Long term studies on drug combinations indicate the possibility of minimising the development of drug resistance with new blood schizontocides. Studies on chloroquine resistance have revealed that highland P. berghei is a mixture of two parasites, only one of which is drug resistant. Phenanthrenemethanols and quinolinemethanols are shown to produce some ultrastructural modifications in blood stages of P. berghei. Parasite metabolism was further investigated.
