This paper deals with the observation of gravity waves from meteorological satellites. The methodology for viewing the waves is given and the statistics for a 395-day period are presented. The gravity waves described have been previously observed and reported in the literature through cloud observations from the ground. The alternating light and dark lines identified as propagating gravity waves are thought to result from condensation and dynamic compression of atmospheric moisture. The gravity waves are shown to travel in the same average direction as F-region ionospheric events.
