Abstract:

Undisturbed loess is useful as a modeling material in studies of rock mechanics. Unity scaling of the angle of internal friction is attained where necessary by using very dry loess in the laboratory. Other properties such as unit weight, compressional wave velocity, and moduli limit the size of the model except in the simplest static-elastic regime. Thus, for modeling static yield of an average rock with gravity, the scale factor for length must be about 1100. The availability of numerous sophisticated model testing systems at the Waterways Experiment Station enhances the usefulness of the infinitely abundant and easily workable Vicksburg loess for model studies of rock mehcanics phenomenology, excavation behavior, and rock-structure interaction.
