The Induction Period of the Decomposition of Hydrazine on the Shell 405 Catalyst.

The induction period of the decomposition of hydrazine on the Shell 405 catalyst is a function of temperature and, under laboratory conditions, decreases from 99 milliseconds at 2C to 10 milliseconds at 37C. The decomposition rate increases over the same temperature range, corresponding to an activation energy of 12.7 or - 1.1 kJmole. The results of this laboratory scale study are considered in relation to published data for the ignition delay of hydrazine thrusters, and in relation to previous studies of hydrazine decomposition.
