An exploratory program was conducted to evaluate the photochemical ignition concept in standard General Electric combustor test rigs using igniters supplied by Photochem Industries, Inc. A basic objective of this program was to determine the minimum energy input requirements for ignition of an F101 combustor with an ultraviolet light source. A total of 34 ignition attempts were made with a total of fourteen Photochem Industries igniters. The majority of the testing was conducted at simulated ground start operating conditions. The igniter energy input level was varied from 5 to 150 joules. The energy pulsing was varied from one pulse up to 80 pulses at a 2 per second rate i.e., a single pulse was applied for some tests, and multiple pulses were applied for some tests.
