The particles of wear were recovered and analyzed from more than 200 oil samples using Ferrographic techniques. Oil samples from controlled component tests and from field operating systems were analyzed. The particles have been classified by morphology and material and have been related to the wear mechanisms. The character of the particles which occur during normal operation is discussed. When the machine starts to fail not only does the amount of particulate matter increase, but some unique types of particles are generated. These types are shown to be related to specific modes of wear and can be used to determine the location of the failure.
