A Queueing Approach to Allocating Spares of Recoverable Items Among Advance Naval Bases

Shortages of items in use often occur in operating systems where the component units are located at distances from one another. A specific recoverable item is considered for a Navy system in which a stock of spares and a repair facility are located at each advance base. With each repair facility viewed as a queueing system, expressions for the expected number of back orders for the total system are derived. A marginal approach is proposed for determining the optimal allocation of spares to each advance base.
