As one of a series of studies dealing with the levels-of-maintenance problem, the report concerns the capability for field maintainability of depot-discovered defects. Six F-4 aircraft were followed through depot inspections, and the 1932 defects discovered were rated by various depot personnel in terms of where base or depot the defect could have been maintained, its effect on the aircraft, and related issues. A subsample of 177 of these defects were judged in similar categories by base maintenance personnel. Both depot and base judges estimated that almost all defects in the sample could be discovered and repaired at base level without additional equipment.
