The life cycle of California coastal fog was investigated by examining visibility, temperature, and wind data obtained on a 56 m tower in 10 fog occurrences at Vandenberg AFB in July 1972. The Vandenberg radiosonde data showed that fog did not form when the base of the large scale subsidence inversion was located 400 m or more above the earths surface. Fog formed at the surface as the base of the oceanic stratus cloud lowered in response to net long wave radiational cooling at the cloud top after sunset.
