T. E. Lawrence and Mao Tse Tung are two of the masters of modern guerrilla warfare. The writings of each man and descriptions of their campaigns were studied to derive the principles upon which they based their strategic decisions. Comparison of these principles revealed many similarities and only one major difference Lawrence taught that pitched battles should be avoided while Mao preached the need to encircle and annihilate enemy forces completely. Offensive battles and defensive battles fought using each mans doctrine are outlined and compared.
