Several candidate electrolytes for hydrocarbonair fuel cells were selected on the basis of probable low adsorption, chemical and electrochemical stability, low volatility, low toxicity, etc. A Teflon cell and electrolyte pump were designed and constructed for use at 140C. Hexafluorophosphoric acid was found to be chemically unstable in the presence of water. Trifluoro methane sulfonic acid monohydrate showed promise but wet Teflon bonded electrodes. Solid polymer electrolyte and bistrifluoromethylphosphonic acid and pentadecafluorooctanoic acid will be tested at a later date.
