Abstract:

The effectiveness of conceptual helicopter gun systems ranging from 30 millimeters to 105 millimeters is compared for both armored and personnel targets. Projectiles considered are shaped charge and high explosive fragmentation. The scenario considered was a helicopter hover at low altitude with the target from 500 to 4000 meters away. At the longer range, the effectiveness of gun systems is shown to be low even when used with very accurate systems. The relatively lethality is such that approximately eight rounds of 30mm are equivalent to one 105mm round. This relative comparison is dependent on specific gun system parameters and is shown to be very sensitive to projectile impact zone dimensions for personnel targets.
