Metallocarborane Complexes of Titanium, Zirconium and Vanadium.

The synthesis of the first metallocarborane complexes of Group IV and V transition metals is described. The reaction between the metal halides TiCl4, ZrCl4 and VCl3 and C2R2B10H102- R H, CH3 has yielded a series of metallocarboranes formulated as MC2R2B10H10H1022- with M in the formal oxidation state of 2M Ti, R H, CH3 M Zr, R CH3 M V, R H. For M Ti and Zr, the diamagnetic 13-vertex metallocarboranes were found to be fluxional in solution, as evidenced by 11B and 1H nmr spectrosocpy. In all cases, the proposed structure is a monomer containing a metal atom symmetrically pi bound to two carborane cages.
