An elastodynamic explanation is offered for propagation of a crack out of its plane skew crack propagation, under stress-wave loading. A two-dimensional geometry is considered. An unbounded body containing a crack is subjected to a suddenly applied antiplane line load, which generates a stress wave. By employing analytical results for the intensity factors, the conditions for skew crack propagation at the instant that the crack is struck, is investigated, on the basis of the balance of rates of energies. A speed of crack propagation above which skewing can be expected is derived.
