Abstract:
A crossed-beam study of the electron impact excitation and ionization of N4 is described. A beam of N4 ions with MeV energy is produced in a Van de Graaff accelerator coupled with a gas stripper and separated from other charge states by magnetic and electrostatic analysis. The ion beam is crossed with a variable energy electron beam in a well-defined geometry. Radiation from the excited ions is observed with a photomultiplier downstream from the interaction region. The ions promoted to higher charge states are separated from the primary beam electrostatically and detected with a silicon surface-barrier detector. Chopping of both ion and electron beams is employed. Results are presented for the N4 transition at 1240 A in the collision energy range 130 - 400 eV. Substantial reduction in the N5 background was achieved but variations in this background precluded measurement of the ionization cross section of N4.
